Curriculum-Based Support Groups CBSG® is an evidence-based preventive intervention for youth whose situations, attitudes and behaviors place them at elevated risk for future behavioral and health problems including substance abuse, delinquency and violence.
Unlike other preventive programs, CBSG uses a support group format. Children and youth meet in confidential, small group settings and are taught a set of essential life skills to help them:
- Learn how to cope with difficult family situations.
- Resist negative peer pressure.
- Respect others.
- Set and achieve goals.
- Make healthy choices.
- Refuse alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
The long-term goal of the CBSG Program is to break the cycle of family violence, chronic homelessness, delinquent or criminal behavior, and substance abuse in families. Youth participating in this program show improvements in attitudes and intentions against substance use, decreases in rebellious behavior and decreases in antisocial attitudes.
Services We Provide
CBSG can be implemented in schools, faith based settings, homeless shelters, group homes and transitional settings. The program is designed for both males and females, ages 4-17, working in small groups of six to twelve students for twelve weeks. This is a multi-cultural program and all materials have been translated into Spanish.
