Transitional Housing Locations

The Way Home

The Way Home is an affordable, transitional housing option for families in recovery from substance abuse. ASAC’s transitional housing program for recovering families is in Linn County.

In July 2005, the Iowa State Legislature established a Transitional Housing Loan Fund to address the lack of affordable housing for families in recovery. This legislation led to ASAC applying for tax credit financing, state and local HOME funds, and a transitional housing loan to establish a safe, low cost, long-term transitional housing program for persons who have successfully completed a substance abuse treatment program. In January 2007, “The Way Home” opened its doors.

The Way Home is devoted to the choice of recovery. It is a place where families are nurtured, goals can be reached and the strength of self-sufficiency is gained through hard work, respect, and maintaining personal integrity.

Nestled back off of busy Kirkwood Blvd. SW, this twenty-four unit apartment complex includes sixteen 2-bedroom units and eight 3-bedroom units. Each apartment is furnished with all major appliances, including a stove, refrigerator, microwave, washer, dryer, and dishwasher. The 2016 rents are; $627 for a 2-bedroom and $745 for a 3-bedroom (the 3 bedroom units have 1 ½ baths). The deposit is equivalent to one month’s rent.

The Way Home also provides a playground area for children and their families, a community room for social gatherings and activities, a computer center, and on-site supportive services such as substance abuse counseling, life skills classes, and support groups. There is also a tenant council that represents the community in providing program feedback.
