ASAC can provide small-group education for youth, young adults, or adults who have had some involvement with substances or problem gambling but do not meet the criteria for treatment. This could include:

ASAC partners with a variety of local organizations and coalitions across Iowa for community prevention programs. Our community based prevention programs utilize evidence-based tactics and proven strategies to reduce substance use and problem gambling.
School & Youth Services
School & Youth Services
ASAC provides prevention services and youth drug prevention programs within a number of area schools. Programs for students focus on topics such as:
- Prescription safety
- Vaping/e-cigarettes
- Alcohol
- Marijuana
- Problem gambling
- Healthy coping skills
- Developing healthy relationships and communication skills
- Identifying practices used by the media to target youth
As part of supporting substance abuse prevention in schools, ASAC also offers training for faculty and staff, including:
- Prevention 101
- Understanding adverse childhood experiences
- Current drug trends and concealment
- Training on identifying the signs and symptoms of substance use or problem gambling
- Assistance with drug-free, tobacco/nicotine-free, gambling, and Naloxone workplace policies
Workplace Services
Workplace Services
ASAC offers free and donation-supported training to nonprofit and for-profit organizations throughout Eastern Iowa. Healthy, substance-free workplaces save thousands of dollars every year and provide better service to customers.
ASAC staff can address substance abuse in the workplace and help businesses create a safe and healthy atmosphere by developing or revising company drug or tobacco/nicotine policies.
ASAC can conduct educational sessions for employees and managers. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Drug-free workplace training for supervisors and employees
- Drug trends training, including signs and symptoms of misuse in employees
- Reasonable suspicion training
- Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS)
- Education for the responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol designed to prevent unsafe drinking
- Workplace wellness
- Smoking cessation
- Problem gambling
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
On-site workplace training sessions are free to non-profit agencies in Linn, Benton, Jones, Jackson, Clinton, Dubuque and Delaware counties. ASAC asks for a donation to ASAC Prevention from for-profit businesses in ASAC’s 7-county service area. Policy support is offered free of charge to all businesses within the ASAC service area.

ASAC works with a number of coalitions to provide gambling help and support area communities in addressing substance use.
Jackson County Prevention Coalition
The Jackson County Prevention Coalition (JCPC) is a group of concerned citizens working together to prevent substance abuse in Jackson County, Iowa. The coalition includes representatives from schools, law enforcement, government, health care, media, parents, youth and other businesses and concerned citizens. The group meets the third Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of the Jackson County Courthouse.
Gateway ImpACT Coalition & Camanche-DeWitt Coalition
The Clinton Substance Abuse Council is the non-profit organization that supports the Camanche-DeWitt Coalition. The Camanche-DeWitt Coalition, through partnership and collaboration, works to reduce unhealthy use and abuse of substances and related issues by youth and, over time, adults in Camanche and DeWitt and surrounding areas.
The Gateway ImpACT Coalition, through collaboration, works to develop solutions to community problems that are related to substance abuse issues through the process of facilitation, cooperation, education, and communication.

A group of local residents and professionals creating and ensuring environments where all youth are able to resist negative influences while embracing positive opportunities.
Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth
Engaging our communities in efforts to reduce substance abuse through creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for youth and adults in Jones County.
Healthy Delaware County Coalition
Healthy Delaware County strives to promote the health and wellbeing of the community by addressing issues related to substance use, brain health, and other co-occurring issues with a focus on healthy choices, resources, and collaborative efforts to improve the quality of life in Delaware County.
Dubuque Wellness Coalition
Dubuque County’s Wellness Coalition seeks to create systems, policies and engagement to ensure that all have access to healthy lifestyle and wellness opportunities.
Alliance of Coalitions for Change (AC4C)
AC4C (Alliance of Coalitions for Change) is a collection of Iowa-based coalitions that work to provide substance abuse prevention strategies and resources to local communities.
SOAR Alcohol Workgroup
SOAR (Sobriety, Option, Accountability, Response) is an alcohol workgroup dedicated to addressing the rising issue of alcohol misuse among adults aged 45 and older in Linn County.
We invite community members to join our monthly meetings, held on the second Thursday of every month from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the ASAC Prevention Office, 3536 18th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids, IA or virtually via Microsoft Teams. Youth Resources
- SADD is a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence, and teen suicide.
- YourLifeIowa provides help for anyone seeking assistance for alcohol, drug use, problem gambling or mental health. You can call, text or chat any time.
- MyLifeMyQuit helps teens quit using nicotine products like vapes and cigarettes!
- ISTEP is the Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention, educating about the dangers of tobacco and vaping.
Tobacco & Nicotine Specific Resources
- Quitline Iowa offers confidential, free access to support to quit using tobacco or nicotine products. Nicotine Replacement Therapy is offered to many clients at no charge. Both phone and text services are available.
- Truth Initiative seeks, speaks, and spreads factual information about smoking, vaping, and nicotine.
- The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids works to save lives by advocating for public policies that prevent kids from smoking, help smokers quit and protect everyone from secondhand smoke.

- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) supports research conducted within the Institute, as well as in institutions around the world.
Prescription Drugs
- TakeAway is Iowa’s medication disposal program. More than 440 pharmacies in Iowa participate in TakeAway and properly dispose of unused or expired medications that are not considered controlled substances. Discover which medications can be disposed of through TakeAway and find a participating pharmacy near you.
- Permanent prescription drug drop boxes that accept controlled substances are located throughout our service area.
Gambling Resources
- 1-800-Bets-Off is an Iowa state-funded helpline that provides problem gambling information and referral services. Support is also available by texting (855) 895-8398.
- Your Life Iowa has a wealth of resources for those seeking assistance with problem gambling, from a three-question “Am I at risk?” quiz to help for family and friends. Support and assistance is offered through live chat.
- The National Council on Problem Gambling provides advocacy for programs and services to assist problem gamblers and their families.
- International Center for Responsible Gaming is a national organization devoted to funding research that helps increase understanding of gambling disorder and youth gambling.
